Bridge Inspections, Repairs, Load Ratings and Sustainability

Presenters:    Ammad Muhammad, P.E., LEED AP
Daniel Whittemore, P. E., LEED AP

Like most states, Connecticut is faced with the challenge of maintaining the integrity of an aging transportation infrastructure in the face of tight budget constraints and reduced federal support.  A key component of this infrastructure is the state’s 4,000+ bridges, many of which are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.  The role of the structural engineers in the evaluation and repair of bridges is critical to the continued safety of the traveling public.  This program is intended to offer structural engineers, contractors and other construction industry professionals who do not typically work in the field of bridge design, evaluation and inspection an appreciation of the importance and magnitude of this work, as well as an understanding of the challenges this work often entails.

The discussion will include a description of Connecticut’s bridge inspection and load rating programs, cite examples of the types of distress often discovered in bridge members and decks, review repair methodologies and discuss approaches to bridge sustainability and preservation.

Speakers: Daniel Whittemore, PE, LEED AP, is the Vice President of AI Engineers, Inc., where he is responsible for bridge design, management and load rating companywide.  A Professional Engineer in seven states, Mr. Whittemore’s work on bridge load rating and sustainability has been internationally published in academic and trade publications and was recently featured in several DOT and FHWA training programs.

Ammad Muhammad, PE, LEED AP, is an Engineering Manager at AI Engineers Inc. Ammad has vast experience in managing and performing complex bridge and sign structure inspections, compiling condition ratings, scheduling and coordinating bridge inspections, bridge load rating analysis, bridge design, and concrete repairs.
